France, home to la grand font Philip
and Judith Parker |
welcome to the peace and tranquility of the Charente & La Grand Font , a special hideaway Until recently the Charente has always been counted as a backwater, a part of France neglected by the discerning visitor in preference to the Mediterranean hotspots and the more well known British enclaves of the Dordogne and Brittany. Yet once visited it's easy to understand the Charente's instant popularity, the same qualities that seduced the Parkers when they initially bought the property four years ago are equally irresistible to short term visitors. Situated in rolling countryside at the foot of a valley, amid shimmering sunflowers inter dispersed with the local vines that are used to make the popular aperitif "Pineau". It is everything we dream that a sleepy rural France should be, romantic, beautiful, calming and quiet. In fact it is so quiet you can hear the muffled sound of children playing in the village 4 kilometres away. It really does feel like you have travelled back in time to the France that inspired Matisse and Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh's painting of sunflowers |
